Surprisingly, there's quite a debate over whether oil catch cans are actually worth the money. It was decided that they aren't worth as much money as what the big brand companies are charging, but the benefits of the can are undeniable. So, a nice looking black aluminum oil catch can, branded "D1 Spec" was selected on Ebay. Great time was taken to locate one that looked solid, but could also be dismantled if required. The ability to see how much oil it had collected was also important. As expected, the can was completely hollow and probably wouldn't collect the oil unless it flowed in liquid form, which would obviously be a serious problem.
We hit up a local supermarket and found Stainless Steel dish scrubbing wire mesh pads. They are cheap but make sure the ones used are actually Stainless Steel as anything else will corrode or rust, allowing bits of metal flake to enter your engine. With the D1 Spec Oil Catch Can loaded, it was installed via hose from the PCV valve and back to an air intake on the carburetor.
With several months of use, a very faint film of oil could be seen on the stainless steel mesh inside the can. It seems like the functionality of the can is effective and we expect the engine is operating efficiently enough that the intake air in this engine is just fairly clean. If anything changes, an update will be posted here.
