Stock mono-leaf suspension |
In case you're lost, mono means one, and it refers to the number of leaf springs in your rear axle suspension. Most of the 1968-69 year V8 Camaros received multi-leaf suspension consisting of 4 or even 5 leafs. Having additional leafs adds rear end firmness and longevity. The mono-leaf spring probably held up just fine initially, but after decades of hard starts they start to stay permenatly flexed and sag. If you wanted to upgrade your rear suspension you have plenty of options. You can take your existing mono's to a spring shop and they can heat treat and attempt to put the spring back in your springs. You can take the whole car to the same shop and have them install a 'helper' spring to assist the tired mono. Their are several mono to multi conversion kits available and of course, brand new complete rear suspension packages exist for those with financial stability.
3 leaf springs with U-Bolts instead of stock T-Bolts |
Turbo Camaro received the mono to multi converstion, but instead of buying a complete kit, all the parts were sourced individually to save a few bucks. The 3 leaf springs and HB-1000 bushings were purchased from sdtrucksprings.com. The U-Bolts (1/2" gauge, 3.5" wide, 6" long) and nuts were purchased locally. You can order the U-Bolts from the above site or several other sites. Some of the conversion kits come with shackles as well, which could be a great idea to replace while you have the leafs off. Keep in mind, removing the shackles is almost impossible without dropping the gas tank, so it might be desirable to inspect the shackles before buying new ones and putting out the extra effort. The pads were reusable and because of the design of the spring, no spacers or extra parts are required.
Overall, it's a relatively simple swap that doesn't take a lot of know how to complete.

The 3 leaf springs mentioned above raised Turbo Camaro approximately 1/2" and left the back end feeling stiffer than with the mono. These springs will be perfect for a performance daily driver. This is not the setup to use if you are looking for extra ride height or firmness for constant heavy accelerations like drag racing. You can search for 4-5 leaf springs for those applications but you'll likely need to purchase different brackets and spacers for proper installation.
